A great way to get around in India is to hire a car with a driver, and it is also the safest means of car travel in India.

You can hire a car and driver easily, and the driver's salary is so low that it adds little to the costs of renting a car. A car and a driver is usually rented on a daily basis and come with a limited number of km pr. day. You can also rent the car and driver for a number of days but be sure to agree the total costs in advance. Usually the driver will find his own accommodation and food wherever you travel, but you may be responsible for the driver's expenses, so make sure to clarify how much this is to be each day before you set off.

There are numerous advantages to having a car and a driver compared to driving yourself.

• The traffic in india is very different to what you see elsewhere, and even basic traffic rules are not followed, a native driver is used to this and therefore also the safest means of car travel.
• The driver will often have some knowledge of local tourist destinations, and can to some extent function as a basic tourist guide.
• You can keep your bags and shopping goods with you securely wherever you go.
• If something happens, the driver will usually be able to help, not only does he speak the language, but he will often know what to do in the situation.
• A car is the quickest and most reliable means of going from point to point.

It is rare to find a driver that speaks more than a few words of English, as a result misunderstandings are common, keep sentences short. If the driver is very helpful and friendly, it is a nice gesture to buy him a little something to eat or drink when stopping for food. The driver might expect or ask for a tip at the end of the trip. If you have been happy with his service pay him some amount without overdoing it.
