Located on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River in the far North East of India, Assam, Kaziranga National Park covers an area of approximately 430 square kilometers. The Indian One-Horned Rihno lives here, and due to limitless poaching of this prehistoric survivor, the Kazirange National Park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1940.
Besides of course the great One-Horned Indian Rhino, the other major wild attractions include a large population of Indian Elephants, Indian Bison, Swamp Deer, Hog Deer, Sloth Bears, Tigers, Leopard Cats, Jungle Cats, Otters, Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo and Jackal among other animals. The Kaziranga National Park is also a birding paradise. Among the many birds are Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black Shouldered Kite, Palla's Fishing Eagle, White Tailed Eagle, Himalayan Griffon and large numbers of migratory birds that descend on the park's lakes and marshy areas during winters.
The vast open country makes Kaziranga National Park very accessible and wildlife viewing pleasurable. A popular way to visit the park is by elephant back ride. Authorized and trained guides takes the visitors into the park, and from the back of the elephant, one might see wild elephant herds roaming around or Indian Rhinos browse past visitors unconcernedly. Since Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary is easily accessible, it provides a chance to see animals in the wild at close Quarters, making this national park a very rewarding experience.
In the nearby Karbi Anglong tourists can stroll through coffee and rubber plantations. You can also venture through the tea gardens that Assam is so famous for.
