There are different levels of difficulty based on altitude, geographical features, and available facilities. Any expedition at altitudes of 3,000 - 5,000 meters is classified as moderate; 5,000 - 6,500 is difficult; and above the altitude of 6,500 meters is classified as advanced. For moderate level, basic adventure courses from any mountaineering institute and some high altitude trekking experience is all that is required. For mountaineering in the difficult and advanced level, one is required to have done advanced programs in mountaineering and a good experience of trekking and climbing at the moderate level.
The foothills of the Himalayas are the core of mountaineering activities in India. The area around Manali, Beas Kund and Hunman Tibba are some of the popular mountaineering destinations i Himachal Pradesh. If you are a beginner then this area is a perfect mountaineering spot, although you also find several challenging peaks in the areas of Lahaul, Spiti and the Kullu valley.
In the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir in northeast India, the Num, Kun and Zanskar ranges are quite popular with mountaineers. These snow covered mountains will not only test your stamina but also your technical skills. Some of the mountain peaks here extend above 7,000 meters.
The Garhwal and Kumaon regions of Uttar Pradesh draw a large number of trekkers as well as mountaineers and are among the most important mountaineering destinations in India. Sikkim is another important mountaineering destination.
All mountaineers are expected to have an X Mountaineering Visa endorsed on their visa by an Indian Embassy/High Commission abroad. It is a punishable offense to climb a mountain without prior permission. Send your application with all the necessary documents at least three months in advance to the Indian Mountaineering Foundation for processing.
The summer months are the best time for the mountains. Trekking in the lower Himalayas and climbing in the higher ranges are possible through May to mid-October. The month of July should be avoided in Himachal and Uttar Pradesh as there is heavy rain and a risk of landslides during this month.
