Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Kerala, and has a picturesque lake at the heart of the sanctuary. Formed with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir provides a permanent source of water for the local wildlife. Apart from Elephants, the other animals to be seen are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Indian Wild Dog and very rarely a Tiger, although there now are an estimated 40 tigers in the Sanctuary.
Kumily, situated just 4 kilometers from the Sanctuary, is a growing town where tourism is fastly catching up just like the spice trade, the major occupation of this small town. Kumily is well equipped with excellent hotels and resorts for accommodation. Apart from visiting Pariyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kumily is a convenient starting point to explore Kerala's beautiful Cardamon Hills. Guides will offer trips via jeep or taxi to the hills, these trips works out as a good travel value.
Boat cruises on the Periyar Lake is a popular option to check out the wildlife of Periyar Sanctuary. Although it is unusual to see many animals from the boats, you may still spot a family of Elephants, Wild Boar and Sambar Deer by the water's edge. The upper deck is best for wildlife viewing when taking a boat cruise; you can also consider renting your own guided boat.
