Entry Requirements
Citizens of most countries who want to visit India are required to possess a valid passport of their country and a valid Indian visa.
Foreigners wanting to visit India must have a passport valid for at least 6 months and an appropriate visa obtained abroad from an Indian mission. To obtain a tourist visa there are the following general requirements:
- An original, signed passport valid for 6 months from the day of application, and with at least two blank visa pages.
- Duly completed visa application form, one visa form per applicant. Applications must be completed on-line, then signed by applicant.
- Two recent passport-size photographs, in color, front view and with a plain/light background.
- Correct visa fee.
- Supporting documents, where necessary.
Visas are usually processed in 5 business days. Rush service of 24-48 hour processing may be available for an additional fee. It is wise to ask for a multiple entry visa even if you are not planning to use it - they cost the same, and come in handy if you decide last minute to visit one of the neighboring countries. Usually, a tourist visa to India is valid for 180 days, but even if it is valid for longer, the duration of stay in India is only for a maximum period of six months. Be aware that the validity of all visas to India is counted from the date of issue and not from the date of entry. Also be aware that travellers must leave India on or before the expiration of their visa.
Rules, fees and validity of visas will differ based on citizenship. Check the website of the Indian embassy, consulate or high commission in your country for the exact rules and requirements.
