In almost every part of India, there are great trekking and walking opportunities, although the first that comes into mind is trekking in the Indian Himalayas.

The mountain ranges of India promise breathtaking and exciting trekking trips. The mighty Himalayan ranges, with their rugged beauty and lofty mountains attracts trekkers from all around the world. But it is not only Himalayas in India where you can trek, there are many other options to choose from. Nigiri hills, hills of Western and Eastern Ghats, the grasslands at Munnar or the rain forests at Periyar in Kerala are some of the places where you can trek through green forests viewing the fauna and flora in natural habitat as well as villages with their own peculiar traditions. The trek routes in these areas are not challenging compared to Himalayas, and are ideal for less experienced trekkers. Trekking destinations in the Indian Himalayas can broadly be divided into two major areas: the Western Himalayas, covering the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal, and the Eastern Himalayas covering Darjeeling region of West Bengal, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Badrinath in Garhwal Himalays is one of the most famous trekking routes in India. Other major treks include in Western Himalaya includes: Jalori Pass Trek from Narkanda; Solang Valley to Beas Kund; Dhauladhar treks beginning at Dharamsala; Baijnath, Palampur and Pir Panjal Trek in Himachal Pradesh; Tepovan to Shiving Trek, Darma Valley Trek, Pindari Glacier Trek, Nanda Devi Trek and Milam Glacier Trek in Uttaranchal; as well as Pensi La to Padum, Karsha to Lamayaru, and Sputik to Alchi Trek in Jammu and Kashmir.

Many institutions are providing professional help and advice to persons not very much familiar with the conditions of trekking in Himalaya. Also there are many base camps in the Himalaya areas which provide facilities for trekkers on their way. Many of the travel agents in India furthermore provide package trekking trips at various destinations in India, for a comfortable trip, there are many hotels and hill resorts, especially if you choose to trek at some of the destinations outside of the Himalays.
